The book has spawned an illustrated version, an opera and a book about the book (Stylized: A Slightly Obsessive History of Strunk & White's The Elements of Style by Mark Garvey). Between all the long and slow-moving novels I've been reading lately, I snuck in a short book about grammar. From the sound of this article in Newsday, Maira Kalman's new book (for adults) wins the quirky award today. The Elements of Style (Illustrated) by Strunk, White, and Kalman (2007). The story behind it began at Cornell University. The classic little book "The Elements of Style" -- the English classroom staple that urges omitting needless words, explains subject-verb agreement and savors the active voice -- turns 50. New editions followed in 1972, 1979 and 1999; an illustrated edition was issued in 2005, and a 50th anniversary edition appears this month, published by Pearson Education Inc. I don't often buy books or music, but there are two titles out that I'm sure I'll be plunking down cash for. The first is a CD--the remastered edition of Elton John's Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy.
